Our August meeting is coming up, August 8th at the Hometown Buffet on NW Expressway near 63rd Street. The actual meeting starts at 7PM, preceded by dinner at about 6. I’m looking forward to this meeting, as the topic is tube testers. There is a lot variety in testers. And most have some attribute that is good, possibly with others that are drawbacks. Everyone is asked to bring a tester or two so that we can compare. A few tubes to test to compare readings should also be fun, especially tubes that test good on one type tester, but have no emission on another. I’m hoping that some members can offer tips on repair of testers, and calibration. Other questions that can hopefully be answered are: Are Hickok testers really better? What is so great about a military TV7/D?

I picked up a trunk load of items for the donation auction in Moore, but additional items are always welcome to help support the club. I’ve been advised that a group from the Tulsa club will be in attendance. It should be a great meeting!

It’s certainly hot! Maybe this column will be Kool! At the last meeting we re-elected the previous slate of officers. So the President is Jim Collings; Vice President, Roger Knop; Secretary, Jim Tyrell; and Treasurer, Gene Robertson. Others serving the club are Dale McLellan, Broadcast News Editor; and Jacob Kresky, Webmaster. Thanks to all who are serving and keeping our club going. It was brought up that we are only receiving about two membership renewals per month, so our membership is dwindling. So if you are behind, please pay the $15 for another year and support your club. Also material for the Broadcast News is needed. All of our members are knowledgeable and capable of writing a small piece on something. Please do it and share with the rest of us!

The topic for this month’s meeting is on repair of bakelite radios, including cabinet repair. The video by Bret Menassa will be shown. Jim Tyrrell will bring the CD and a player. We need someone to bring a TV to the meeting with a large screen for easier viewing. If you can help, please give Jim Tyrrell a call at 715-2760. Otherwise we will likely be looking at a 15 inch screen. The meeting is Saturday July 11th, at the Hometown Buffet on NW Expressway near 63rd and Portland. The meeting starts at 7 PM, with time for dinner before. (Normally about 6 PM). I’ll suggest a topic for the August meeting, Tube Testers. It can be a hands-on meeting where everyone brings their tube testers and we test a few tubes to see how the testers compare in accuracy, and ease of use. We can also talk about calibration and repair/restoration. I think it can be interesting and informative. Last month’s meeting was a good one on Federal receivers, and we had a large donation auction with some nice items donated by John Bryant.

June 2009 Jim Collings

Here it is, time for another Broadcast News Column. I’ve been on vacation in Hawaii and not too focused on radio collecting. It was a nice break. We did go into one antique shop where I expected to see mainly collectibles like baseball cards and repro items. I was surprised that everything was old, but mostly small items. There was nothing radio related, but they did have some Edison cylinder records. The only radio I saw in Hawaii was a Truetone horizontal wood set with an eye tube, from about 1937. It was on display on the mantle of a sugar cane plantation home.

Our meeting last month was one a good one with higher attendance than most. Dale, our newsletter editor, explained with examples how he reproduces knobs and dials. It was very enlightening. Also we talked about painted bakelite radios. Gene brought quite a few interesting examples. Jim Tyrrell has details elsewhere in this issue.

The June meeting will be on June 13th at the Hometown Buffet on NW Expressway, at the normal 6 PM time. The topic for the meeting is Federal. This includes their radios and other products, and also includes the later small AC/DC sets that were made under a revival of the Federal name. If you have anything Federal, bring it for us to see. If you have one of the early Federals, please advise me so that I can skip lugging one of mine to the meeting. Also, I nearly forgot, that June is typically when we elect/re-elect officers. If you would like to be an officer, here’s your chance. We should have a good donation auction, as usual. John Bryant left quite a few items with me for the auction, including Zenith literature.

President’s Column May, 2009

I was pleased with our annual meet last month! We had a pretty good turnout, had some great display entries, and a lot of equipment changed hands. I hope everyone had fun. All the out of town collectors that I talked to were happy and glad they came. The weather was perfect, also. There were some very tough calls in determining some of the winners in the contest, as there were many great displays. Unfortunately there were not many expensive items in the auction, but everything was donated, and the club appreciates the donations to help defray the cost of renting the facility. Also, I need to thank all of those who helped out and made the meet successful.

Our meeting this month will have two topics. It was decided at the last meeting to show and discuss painted bakelite radios this month, and also Dale McLellan will show us how he reproduces knobs. Molding knobs has always seemed difficult to me, with a lot of trial and error involved, so this should be interesting. Also, everyone should have a painted bakelite radio. So, even if it is the most common, a white one, bring it to show.

See you at the meeting, May 9th at the Hometown Buffet at 6 PM, and bring a painted bakelite!
